Competitive Shooting Q & A
By Jeff Martone
The following article is a compilation of questions and answers concerning the physical preparation for competitive shooting.  Dr. Von Rice gave me permission to share our correspondence with fellow tactical athletes.  The training insights are universal and can be applied to physical enhancement for any sport or profession.

New Life, New Strength
By Jeff Martone
There are two things I never tire of hearing: 1)The personal testimony of believers reflecting God’s amazing grace and 2) The physical transformation of broken people, overcoming all odds, contrary to “conventional” wisdom and “main stream” training methods.  It is my hope that the following true story will inspire and motivate you as much as it did me.

The Strongman Swing
by Jeff Martone
I recently rediscovered Mark H. Berry’s Illustration Chart Third Course In Weight Lifting Technique while searching though some unpacked boxes.  I noticed a sequence which is described as a swing.  It’s actually an interesting variation of a one-handed dumbbell swing (see photo).  Unfortunately, no exercise descriptions accompanied Mr. Berry’s wall chart.  I searched for a written explanation of this drill, but came up empty.

Kettlebells and Roadside Assistance
by Jeff Martone
Kettlebells have been described as the ultimate free-weight, a total gym you can hold in one hand, the ultimate fitness tool, etc.    Anyone who has trained with kettlebells can attest to their effectiveness in building strength, stamina, and fat loss.  They are also convenient to take on road trips, whether for work or pleasure.   I’m going to share a couple of incidents where the kettlebell came to the rescue in a non-fitness application.

The Fighter's Four (a.k.a. Advanced Circuit #4)
by Jeff Martone
Steve Bacarri; boxing coach and co-author of Power Behind the Punch: Kettlebell Conditioning for Boxers designed this great drill for increasing a fighters punch out-put. Even if you are not a fighter, this drill will rapidly increase your cardiovascular conditioning, strength-endurance, and “burn the butter”.

The Power of Three
by Jeff Martone
Three kettlebells, three drills, three rounds. Nine minutes of intense Tactical Athlete drills. Keep the warm up to the minimum, save your energy because you’re going to need it.

The Tactical Ten: Burning the butter in 10 minutes
by Jeff Martone
If your life is anything like mine, sometimes I literally have only 10 minutes to squeeze in a quick training session.  Anything is better than nothing.  I’m going to share with you two total body drills that will kick your metabolism into high gear.

Bridging Part II: Mastering the Bridge in Minutes, not Months
by Jeff Martone
The wrestler’s back bridge is a great total body exercise that builds strength and flexibility.  As Steve Baccari says, “It works everything - from your nose to your toes”.   The following insights will result in almost instant results (i.e. perfect form) with minimal pain and suffering.  What would normally take months to accomplish can literally be reduced to minutes.

Bridging Part I:  Releasing the Parking Break
by Jeff Martone
Tight hip flexors, bad backs and obesity are epidemic in the US today.  Why? Because we’ve turned into a bunch of lazy lima beans that literally sit around all day.  We sit in front of the computer “working”. We sit in front of the “one-eyed brain sucker” (i.e. TV) “relaxing”. We sit while eating, driving, socializing, etc.

Turkish Get-Up: Functional & Fun
by: Jeff Martone

The Turkish get-up is an excellent total body strength exercise formerly practiced by old-time strongmen and wrestlers.  In the days of old, this was the first exercise given to aspiring weight-lifters to practice.  It’s been said that no other exercises were given until the pupil could perform it with a 100 pound weight.  Upon completing this goal, all the major muscle groups, small stabilizing muscles, tendons and ligaments of the practitioner have been significantly strengthened.

The “88lb. Pull-Up Challenge”
by: Jeff Martone
Has life become much busier than you would prefer it to be? Are you currently going through a hectic season in life and tempted to skip workouts because there is not enough time? Let me encourage you that rapid strength gains are possible even in times of high stress/low sleep, abbreviated training sessions, and irregular eating habits. The principles of low-rep/high-tension strength training work. The following story demonstrates that truth can be stranger than fiction.

Fun with Kettlebells

The purpose of this article is to share a few insights to make some of the basic exercises more fun and challenging.

One-Legged Janda Sit-Ups
by: Jeff Martone
The Janda sit-up, as demonstrated in Pavel’s Bullet-Proof Abs book and Beyond Crunches video has been a staple exercise for me and the people I train. Ideally, it is best to use the Ab Pavelizer when practicing Janda sit-ups.
