Kettlebells and Road-Side Assistance

by Jeff Martone, owner of Tactical Athlete

Kettlebells have been described as the ultimate free-weight, a total gym you can hold in one hand, the ultimate fitness tool, etc.    Anyone who has trained with kettlebells can attest to their effectiveness in building strength, stamina, and fat loss.  They are also convenient to take on road trips, whether for work or pleasure.   I’m going to share a couple of incidents where the kettlebell came to the rescue in a non-fitness application.

My family and I were on the road, returning home from a week long Tactical Athlete Seminar in Florida.  After five hours of driving, I turn the wheel over to my lovely wife, reclined my seat back, and proceeded to do what I do best – sleep.  About 30 minutes into my long a waited nap, I heard loud explosion, felt some serious vibrations coming from the front end, and saw pieces of rubber flying everywhere.  I told my wife to slow it down and pull it over.  The front left tire had totally blown out.  Oh well…there are worst ways to wake up, after all nobody was shooting at us.

I proceeded to dig out the spare tire and jack, loosened the lug nuts, jacked up the front end, removed the lugs, and then tried to pull the rim off.  Since my wife was driving about 70-75 mph, the rim was quite warm to the touch. No matter how hard I pulled or kicked the rim, it just wouldn’t come loose.  It felt like it was welded on.  Now I’m hot, dripping with sweat, thirsty, and becoming increasingly aggravated with this entire problem-solving exercise.  Almost immediately after muttering the words “Lord, help me.”  I remembered the one last kettlebell that we had not sold at the seminar!  It only took 2-3 hits to loosen the rim.  In short order the tire was changed and we were back on the road.  The kettlebell saved us time and money of a roadside visit from a wrecking service.

I know plenty of police and SWAT officers who keep a spare kettlebell in the trunk of their cruisers, just in case they get a little down time to train.  I also know plenty of soldiers and contractors who take their kettlebells with them wherever they go.  A friend sent me this picture a few months a go.  Apparently, they had a tire blow out and couldn’t loosen the lug nuts with their poorly designed foreign lug wrench. Because these guys are true “tactical athletes”, they had a kettlebell in the back of their vehicle.  They improvised and adapted, got the job done, and got back into the mix.

Be sure to remember to pack your kettlebell the next time you go on a trip.  It just might turn out to be more than just a fitness tool!

Train hard – Stay Safe,
