 Tell-A-Friend About T.A.

The White Battalion 1918 A.D.

By April of 1918, World War I was coming to a swift close.  The Germans were facing the inevitable, defeat.  The mighty hand of God was revealed to hundreds of German soldiers in a miraculous way as they were advancing their troops near the little French town of Bethune.  Perhaps this incident occurred in order to allow them an opportunity to acknowledge defeat and to turn to God who controls the destinies of men and nations.

The Bible says that it is God who raises up one and puts down another. Psalm 75:6-7:”For Promotion cometh neither form the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.”

The Account you are about to read was written by a German captain who witnessed an extraordinary event, along with hundreds of other Germans:

We were advancing at the head of our troops, all of whom were in excellent spirits, singing as they marched along, thinking that the British were now defeated and all that remained was to go forward without much opposition and capture Paris, where we would have a fine time – plenty of drinks and all else we desired.

By my side was my Lieutenant Fritz, and he suddenly seized hold of my arm, saying, “Look, Herr Captain, there is a large body of mounted men approaching Bethune from the other side.  See, the smoke of the burning houses is blowing away, and I can discern their uniforms.  Why, they are all dressed in white and are mounted on white horses.  Who can they be?”

“I don’t know,” I replied.  “They may be British Colonial mounted troops.”

Lieutenant Fritz replied, “I know of no British Colonial mounted troops with white uniforms and white chargers.  But anyway, they will be blown to pieces now.  Our heavy artillerymen are opening fire upon them.”

We halted instinctively and stood watching those white-uniform-clad cavalrymen advancing quietly through the smoke, their figures clearly outlined in the shining sun against the smoke of the burning town.  We saw the shells breaking amidst their ranks with shattering crashes which shook the ground.  This barrage was followed by intensive machine gun fire which raked the advancing men until it seemed impossible for anyone to survive.  But the White Cavalry came quietly forward at a slow trot and not a man or a horse fell!

Resistless as the incoming tide, they advanced, and in front of them road their leader – a fine figure of a man.  By his side was a great sword similar to those used by the Crusaders, and his hands lay quietly, holding the reins of his great white charger as it bore him forward.  Then a terror seized me, and I found myself fleeing from that awe-inspiring body of white cavalry, frightened and terrified.  All around me were the masses of my men, formerly an army, but now a rabble, broken and afraid, all fleeing from them, but more especially from that wonderful leader on his great white charger…The German army is defeated.  I don’t say you will not have any more fighting, for this your are bound to experience; but I do say that we have lost the war, and that it is due to the “White Cavalry.”

Throughout recorded history there are various accounts of mysterious apparitions that reveal to a discerning, God-fearing believer that God has His angelic host in the midst of world conflicts. Such an account was witnessed and recorded in the days of Elisha.

And the servant of the man of God (Elisha) was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city, both with horses and chariots.  And his servant said unto him, Alas my master!  What shall we do? And he answered, fear not for they who are with us are more than they who are with them.  And Elisha prayed thee, open his eyes, that he may see.  And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw: and, behold the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire around about Elisha (II Kings 6:15-17)

The angelic army of Heaven is always present during battles.  God’s might hand is not shortened in performing His good will.  It should be our desire not to look for angels to visit us and perform some mighty feat in time of trouble, but simply to lean on Him who controls our lives and who holds us in the palm of His hand.

Spirit of God, descend upon my heart; Wean it from earth, through all its pulses move; Stoop to my weakness, mighty as Thou art, And make me love Thee as I ought to love.  I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies, No sudden rending of the veil of clay, No angel visitant, no opening skies; But take the dimness of my soul away.

Hast Thou not bid me love Thee, God and King? All, all Thine own, soul, heart, and strength and mind I see Thy cross – there teach my heart to cling.  O let me seek Thee, and O let me find.  Teach me to feel that Thou art always nigh; Teach me the struggles of the soul to bear, To check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh: Teach me the patience of unanswered prayed.   - George Croly 1780-1860
